OCLC-Mitarbeiter haben für D-Lib sich das Google-Digitalisierungsprojekt genau angeschaut – ein instruktiver Beitrag zur Digitalisierungsdebatte. Grundlage sind WorldCat-Auswertungen. Dieser enthält 32 Mio. Bücher, von denen etwa 2/3 nicht in einer der 5 mit Google kooperierenden Bibliotheken sich befinden. Weitere behandelte Aspekte betreffen das Alter der Bände, die Sprachen (etwa die Hälfte der Bücher der Google 5 sind auf Englisch) und das Copyright (wählt man 1923 als grobe Grenze, so sind mehr als 80 % geschützt). Gern pflichtet man der Folgerung bei: For library-initiated (and funded) programs especially, it is imperative that digitization efforts 1) are organized in ways that leverage available resources to maximize community benefits, and 2) reflect a digitization strategy that is conscious of system-wide implications.
